Sicario 3: Sequel in the works – Josh Brolin hints at an upcoming production start

Finally, an update on "Sicario 3"! Ever since the release of the second film, "Sicario: Day of the Soldado," there has been ongoing talk of another sequel. Now, Josh Brolin, a lead actor from the first two films, has spoken about the current status of "Sicario 3". In an interview with the website ScreenRant, he was able to give fans some positive news.

During the press tour for Brolin's new film "The End Dog Stars," directed by legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott, the Hollywood star emphasized: The new "Sicario" movie "is happening"! He also made a vague comment about a timeline: Brolin hinted to ScreenRant that production could begin "soon"!

Who will direct?

The question of who will direct is currently still completely up in the air. As is well known, the first "Sicario" film was directed by Denis Villeneuve. However, it remains to be seen whether the star director can be persuaded to return. After all, Villeneuve is currently set to work on the next "James Bond" film.

Meanwhile, the return of Stefano Sollima, who directed the second film, also seems unlikely. Upon the release of "Day of Soldado," the director told Variety at the time that he has a different vision for the thriller movie series.

"Every movie in these series needs to be a standalone that stays in the same world. I'd love to watch another chapter of 'Sicario', but it should be from a different director who has their own specific style. You shouldn't have more than one film from the same director. Then it would be too much like a real franchise."

Taylor Sheridan might also be a possibility. Sheridan wrote the screenplays for both "Sicario" films and has gained considerable experience in the director's chair in recent years. In addition to directing several TV episodes, he also directed the neo-western "Wind River." However, it's still just as unclear whether Sheridan will even write the script for "Sicario 3."

Producer Thad Luckinbill Talks About Sicario 3

After all, Sheridan is currently a very busy man, as "Sicario" producer Thad Luckinbill noted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Nevertheless, Luckinbill also expressed confidence about another sequel:

"We're hoping to do it, so fingers crossed. It would be great to get to do another one for the fans."

Luckinbill was not only a producer on the "Sicario" films but remains connected to Sheridan to this day. As an actor, he currently stars alongside Zoe Saldana in the thriller series "Lioness."

Denis Villeneuve's Sicario

With "Sicario," Denis Villeneuve directed one of the most intense thrillers of recent years in 2015. The film follows FBI agent Kate Macer, played by Emily Blunt, who, together with the enigmatic CIA agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and the mysterious hitman Alejandro (Benicio del Toro), is drawn into a brutal war against the Mexican drug cartels. Villeneuve directed the film as a dark, uncompromising thriller that relies less on classic action and more on an oppressive atmosphere and moral gray areas.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado continues the story

The first sequel, "Sicario: Day of the Soldado," followed in 2018. While Emily Blunt did not return, Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro once again took center stage. Additionally, "The Last of Us" star Isabela Merced took on a central role. This time, the story focuses more heavily on Matt Graver and Alejandro, who are tasked by the U.S. government with igniting a war between Mexican cartels. "Day of the Soldado" was therefore not a direct sequel to the story from the first film, but rather expanded the world of "Sicario" with new characters and conflicts.

Taylor Sheridan: A Busy Man

Following his first major successes with "Sicario," Taylor Sheridan has created an entire series universe on Paramount Plus. He is involved in the production of numerous series on the streaming service and serves as showrunner on many of them.

But that's not all—another reason for his packed schedule is Sheridan's approach to work. The series for which Sheridan serves as showrunner typically don't have a traditional writer's room, where multiple writers collaborate on a season's scripts. Instead, Sheridan often writes all the scripts himself, while also frequently directing several episodes or appearing as an actor. So one thing is clear: Sheridan's output is enormous.

Taylor Sheridan's Films and Series

In addition to the screenplays for "Sicario," Sheridan also wrote the scripts for "Hell or High Water" and "Without Remorse." With "Wind River" in 2017, he made his debut as a feature film director in Hollywood and definitively established himself as one of the most important voices in the modern neo-Western genre. However, Sheridan gained even greater recognition with "Yellowstone." The series has spawned several spin-offs, including "1883," "1923," "Marhals," and, most recently, "Dutton Ranch." Sheridan also developed "Mayor of Kingstown" starring Jeremy Renner, the Sylvester Stallone series "Tulsa King," the aforementioned "Lioness," "Landman," starring Billy Bob Thornton and "The Madison." Next up for Sheridan is, among other projects, the "Call of Duty" movie, for which he is writing the screenplay. The video game adaptation, directed by Peter Berg, is set to hit theaters on June 30, 2028.
