The cast of the upcoming "John Wick" spin-off "Caine" continues to grow: As Deadline reports, "The Black Phone" actor Mason Thames has officially joined the cast of the action film. The project is being produced by Lionsgate and directed by martial arts legend Donnie Yen, who will also play the title role. Thames thus joins a star-studded cast that includes, alongside Donnie Yen, Rina Sawayama as Akira and Dacre Montgomery.

In terms of plot, the spin-off picks up where "John Wick: Chapter 4" left off. After the blind hitman was freed from his obligations to the High Table, his journey is set to continue in a standalone adventure. "The Batman" screenwriter Mattson Tomlin will pen the script. Keanu Reeves and "John Wick" director Chad Stahelski are on board as producers. A release date has not yet been set, but filming is already in full swing.

The John Wick Universe: All Movies and Series at a Glance

When the first "John Wick" film hit theaters in 2014, hardly anyone suspected that it would become one of the most successful action franchises of our time. With spectacular fight scenes, a unique underworld full of hitmen, and Keanu Reeves' charismatic performance, the series quickly became a global phenomenon. The so-called "John Wick" universe now includes several films, a TV series, and additional planned spin-offs.

John Wick: The Beginning of a Legend

The first "John Wick" film was released in 2014 and introduced audiences to the eponymous former hitman. After criminals kill his dog and steal his car, Wick comes out of retirement to seek revenge. The plot may seem simple at first glance, but the stylish direction and extraordinary action sequences made the film a surprise hit.

Particularly impressive was the introduction of a secret society of assassins with their own rules, currency, and institutions. The Continental Hotel, a neutral sanctuary for hitmen, quickly became one of the series' most iconic locations.

John Wick: Chapter 2 Expands the World

With "John Wick: Chapter 2" from 2017, the franchise's mythology was significantly expanded. Wick is forced by an old debt to accept one last job. This takes him to Rome and brings him into conflict with the most powerful figures in the underworld. The film introduced numerous new elements, including the High Table, the supreme authority of the assassin world. At the same time, the action sequences became even more elaborate, making it clear that the franchise was designed for the long term.

John Wick: Chapter 3

"John Wick: Chapter 3" was released in 2019. After Wick broke the rules of the Continental at the end of the second film, a bounty is placed on his head. Now he is being hunted by numerous assassins around the globe. The third installment is considered by many fans to be the highlight of the series. The mix of martial arts fights, shootouts, and creative stunts set new standards for modern action films. At the same time, the story of the High Table was further explored, and the universe was given additional backstory.

John Wick: Chapter 4 as the Provisional Climax

Four years later, "John Wick: Chapter 4" followed as the largest and most successful installment in the series to date. In it, Wick makes a final attempt to gain his freedom from the High Table. His journey takes him to Osaka, Berlin, and Paris, among other places.

The film impressed with its massive runtime, epic action sequences, and numerous new characters. Donnie Yen as the blind hitman Caine and Rina Sawayama as Akira were particularly celebrated by fans and critics alike. The film's ending deliberately left room for interpretation while simultaneously opening up new possibilities for further stories within the universe.

The Continental tells the prequel

In 2023, the franchise expanded to television for the first time. The miniseries "The Continental" is set in the 1970s and tells the prequel to the famous hotel from the films. The focus is on a young Winston Scott, who later becomes known as the manager of the New York Continental.

The series shows how Winston gains control of the hotel and the power struggles taking place within the underworld. This gives viewers a deeper insight into the history of one of the franchise's most important institutions. Although the series has a different style than the feature films, it expands the world of John Wick with interesting background information and new characters.

Ballerina Expands the Universe

With "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina", the franchise received its first major feature film in 2025 that does not center on John Wick himself. The film is set between the events of "John Wick: Chapter 3" and "John Wick: Chapter 4" and expands the familiar world of hitmen with a new main character. The plot centers on Eve Macarro, portrayed by Ana de Armas. Following the violent death of her family, the young woman embarks on an uncompromising quest for revenge. Like the films in the main series, "Ballerina" combines intense action sequences with a personal and emotional story.
