The Most Popular Films by Alejandro G. Iñárritu

Alejandro González Iñárritu is one of the most important directors of contemporary cinema. With his unique signature style, the Mexican filmmaker has created a series of internationally acclaimed works. His movies often tell stories of despair and redemption that have an impact far beyond national borders.

Amores Perros

With "Amores Perros", Iñárritu made a rousing theatrical debut. The movie, consisting of three interlinked episodes, is set in Mexico City and deals with violence, love, betrayal and social inequality. Stylistically raw and emotionally stirring, the film is considered the starting point of the so-called "Death Trilogy" and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

21 Grams

The second part of the trilogy, "21 Grams", is a complex, non-linear film about guilt, loss and forgiveness. Featuring stars such as Sean Penn, Naomi Watts and Benicio Del Toro, Iñárritu tells the story of three fates that are linked by a tragic accident. The film impresses with its intensity and strong acting.

Babel

"Babel", the conclusion of the trilogy, weaves stories from Morocco, Mexico, Japan and the USA into a global patchwork of human misunderstandings and cultural barriers. The film received several Academy Awards nominations and brought Iñárritu international recognition as one of the leading storytellers of "global" cinema.

Biutiful

"Biutiful" is set in Spain and focused on an intimate story: Javier Bardem plays a terminally ill father trying to protect his children in a world full of injustice and pain. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Bardem received a nomination for Best Actor.

Birdman

Iñárritu made his big artistic breakthrough in Hollywood with "Birdman". The satirical tragicomedy about a washed-up superhero actor (Michael Keaton) is characterized by its unique camerawork and won four Academy Awards – including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography. The movie deals with ego, artistic identity and the search for meaning in a world characterized by superficiality. In addition to Keaton, other roles were played by "La La Land" star Emma Stone, "Fight Club" actor Edward Norton and "Mulholland Drive" actress Naomi Watts.

The Revenant

With "The Revenant", Iñárritu once again proved his skills as a director. The brutal survival drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio – who at last received his long-awaited first Academy Award for his performance – impresses with its epic visual power and raw authenticity. Iñárritu won the Academy Award for Best Director for the second time in a row, a rarity in film history.
