The new "Jumanji" movie is highly anticipated. Now, the official title of the sequel starring Dwayne Johnson has finally been revealed: "Jumanji: Open World." Johnson unveiled the title alongside his co-stars Jack Black and Kevin Hart at CinemaCon 2026.

During Sony's presentation in Las Vegas, a first trailer for "Jumanji: Open World" was also shown. However, it was intended only for the guests present at CinemaCon and has not yet been released to the public. In light of the trailer, however, numerous U.S. media outlets are commenting on the premise of the new action-adventure. One thing is clear: the title "Open World" says it all. This time, the game world of "Jumanji" collides with the real world. Thus, the fate of two worlds now lies in the hands of the protagonists.

Jumanji Open World: Dwayne Johnson and Co. Return

The film's heroes are once again portrayed by the lead actors from the previous "Jumanji" films. Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Dr. Xander "Smolder" Bravestone. Joining him are Jack Black as Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon, Kevin Hart as Franklin "Mouse" Finbar, and Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse. Other cast members include Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Ser'Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Burn Gorman, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris, Nasim Pedrad, and Danny DeVito.

The director remains unchanged as well. Jake Kasdan, who previously directed "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" and its sequel "Jumanji: The Next Level," is back in the director's chair. Together with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, Kasdan is also credited with the screenplay for "Jumanji: Open World."

There has already been talk that "Jumanji: Open World" is set to be the final installment in the film series. It is, of course, quite possible that this will be the final installment for the current cast. However, it is doubtful whether it will actually be the last "Jumanji" film ever. The success of the film series is simply far too great for that.

Tribute to Robin Williams in Jumanji Open World

It all began with the first "Jumanji" film by director Joe Johnston in 1995. Back then, Robin Williams played the lead role. As a tribute to the first film, there is reportedly an Easter egg in "Jumanji: Open World." The original dice from back then is set to appear in the sequel. "Robin, this one's for you," said Dwayne Johnson, pointing to the sky to honor Hollywood star Robin Williams, who passed away in 2014, as Variety reports in its coverage of CinemaCon.

A spin-off followed in 2005 with "Zathura: A Space Adventure," which is also part of the "Jumanji" franchise. It was directed by Jon Favreau, and the cast included Josh Hutcherson and Kristen Stewart. In 2017, the series finally underwent a reboot, which proved to be a massive box office success. "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" became a blockbuster, grossing $962 million worldwide. The sequel wasn't long in coming: "Jumanji: The Next Level" was released in 2019 and raked in another $801 million at the global box office.

Dunesday: Jumanji faces off against Avengers Doomsday and Dune Part Three

Given this success, another sequel seemed inevitable. And if "Jumanji: Open World" becomes a similarly huge hit, we wouldn't be surprised if another sequel or a reboot hits theaters in a few years. But: The competition is particularly fierce this time around. The theatrical release of "Jumanji: Open World" is scheduled for December 25, 2026. However, the Marvel adventure "Avengers: Doomsday" opens just one week earlier. The science fiction film "Dune: Part Three" is also set to premiere at the same time.

It doesn't get much more blockbuster-heavy than this. The simultaneous release of the two films has even been given its own name: "Dunesday." It remains to be seen how "Jumanji: Open World" will fare financially in the face of this stiff competition. But who knows—maybe fans will flock to all three films and give us a massive year-end at the box office.
