A sequel to the 1990s film "Clueless" is currently in the works as a TV series. Alicia Silverstone, who played the lead role, is also set to return as Cher Horowitz. But now there's a problem: the streaming service Peacock has put the "Clueless" series on hold, as reported by Variety.

Last April, it was announced that the series sequel was in development at Peacock. No reason has been given as to why the streaming service is now backing out. But there is still hope: According to Variety, there are already signs that the potential continuation of "Clueless" will be offered elsewhere. In other words, the series could ultimately end up on a different streaming service.

Alicia Silverstone is set to return in the Clueless series

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are among those behind the planned "Clueless" series. The two already know each other from their work on the series "The O.C." Together with Jordan Weiss, they are set to serve as writers and executive producers. In addition to her on-screen role, Alicia Silverstone is also slated to serve as an executive producer. Director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence, two other key figures from the original film, are also on board as executive producers.

As for the plot of the "Clueless" series, very little is known so far. Basically, all we know is that years have passed since the events of the film and that the series will once again be about the former protagonist, Cher Horowitz. The 1995 teen comedy was inspired by a much older work: Jane Austen's classic novel "Emma" from 1815. The film centers on the popular high school student Cher Horowitz. When she takes a new, initially awkward-seeming student under her wing, things increasingly take a different turn than she had expected. In addition to Alicia Silverstone, the cast included Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Jeremy Sisto, and Donald Faison, among others. A TV series adaptation premiered in 1996, running for three seasons and comprising a total of 62 episodes. However, Cher Horowitz was no longer played by Alicia Silverstone; instead, Rachel Blanchard took over the role.

90s Comeback: Buffy sequel also canceled

"Clueless" isn't the only 90s property set to be revived on TV in the form of a reboot—nor is it the only high-profile example that has failed to materialize for now. Just recently, the planned sequel to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was put on hold. The reboot of the horror series was in the works for the streaming service Hulu. Here, too, former lead actress Sarah Michelle Gellar was set to return to her famous role. Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, director of "Nomadland," was even set to direct the planned pilot episode. In the end, it was all for naught: the project was canceled.

90s hit The X-Files set to return to screens as a reboot

Things are looking better for another hit from the 90s: "The X-Files." The mystery series is set to return to screens as a reboot. The two new lead actors have already been cast: Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler. In the original series, the focus was on two FBI agents, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) , who investigated supernatural cases. The new version of "The X-Files" will once again focus on an unlikely investigative duo. So far, the streaming service Hulu has commissioned a pilot episode. "Sinners" director Ryan Coogler is taking on the directing and screenwriting duties.

A release date has not yet been announced. Nor is it clear whether the project will continue beyond the pilot. However, Jennifer Yale is set to serve as showrunner. If the reboot proceeds to a full season, she will likely set the creative direction alongside Coogler. Let's just hope the whole thing doesn't get canceled again before it even begins.
