New Treasure Island Series Announced: The Cast Has Been Revealed
The series will reinterpret the iconic story by Robert Louis Stevenson
It's one of the greatest adventure stories of all time: "Treasure Island". A new series based on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel is currently in development – and the first casting decisions have now been announced! Amazon MGM has revealed the actors who will play iconic characters such as Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver.
The cast of Treasure Island
Tom Sweet ("The Nutcracker and the Four Realms"), plays the young Jim Hawkins. His development from a sheltered boy to a courageous adventurer is at the heart of the story. The biggest name in the ensemble is probably Hayley Atwell. She is best known to Marvel fans as Peggy Carter in the MCU films. The actress was also recently seen in the "Mission Impossible" films. In the new "Treasure Island" series, she plays Bess Hawkins, Jim's mother.
David Oyelowo takes on the iconic role of Long John Silver. Oyelowo is the lead actor in the film "Selma" and was also part of the cast of "Jack Reacher" and "The Butler". Jack Huston ("Boardwalk Empire") plays British agent Aaron Graham. Tomer Capone ("The Boys") can be seen as pirate Billy Bones.
This is what the new Treasure Island series is about
The series tells the story of young Jim Hawkins, who is drawn into a dangerous adventure after finding a legendary treasure map. Together with his mother Bess, he finds himself aboard the Hispaniola between the ruthless pirate Long John Silver and British agent Aaron Graham.
Amazon MGM describes the series as a "coming-of-age adventure series for a new generation". Paramount+ and MGM+ are behind the production. The first season will comprise a total of six episodes. Production has already begun, but there is no start date yet. Check out all the cast members at a glance:
The myth of Treasure Island
Hardly any other adventure story has had such a lasting impact on the image of pirates as "Treasure Island". Robert Louis Stevenson's novel was published in 1883 and is still considered the blueprint for modern pirate adventures.
The material has been reinterpreted time and again – for cinema and television. Examples include the 1950 film adaptation and the 1990s film starring Charlton Heston. The story also left its mark on the world of animation: "Treasure Planet" moved the action into space and proved how flexibly the basic idea can be adapted to new settings. Overall, there are numerous TV miniseries and international adaptations that continually shed new light on the material.
"Treasure Island" is not always adapted directly, but also serves as a loose template. A popular example from the recent past is the series "Black Sails" – a prequel to "Treasure Island". Here, the backstory of Captain Flint, John Silver, and other historical and fictional pirates is told.
"Treasure Island" has long been more than just an adventure novel; it has become a cultural myth. Many of our modern-day pirate clichés can be traced directly or indirectly back to Stevenson's work. It will therefore be interesting to see how the new series is received by "Treasure Island" fans.
The return of pirate movies?
A new "Treasure Island" series isn't the only thing in the works. Fans of pirate stories can look forward to "The Pirate", a new film starring Jason Momoa from "Deadpool 2" director David Leitch. The project is described as "'The Raid' on a pirate ship" – a concept that should be particularly interesting for action fans. After all, "The Raid" and its sequel are considered by many to be among the best action films of recent years.
And there is more: The pirate film "The Bluff" was released in February 2026. It centers on a former pirate who, in the 19th century, tries to leave her dark past behind – until old enemies reappear and force her to take up arms again. The leading roles are played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and "The Boys" star Karl Urban. You can watch the trailer here and stream the film on Amazon Prime Video.
