Dexter is back! Fans can expect new episodes of the popular serial killer series this year. The industry portal Vanity Fair has now provided some first insights into "Dexter: Resurrection".

Back in 2021, Dexter Morgan enjoyed a revival with "Dexter: New Blood", which continued the story of the original series. "Dexter: Resurrection" is now supposed to follow on from this and tell another chapter of the former blood spatter analyst. The prequel "Dexter: Original Sin" recently premiered on Paramount Plus, which already gave initial indications of how the story might be continued in the new sequel series.

Vanity Fair now offers us a look at the impressive cast. Among them is "Pulp Fiction" and "Kill Bill" icon Uma Thurman. The actress plays the head of security for billionaire Leon Prater, played by "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage.

Of course, we are also treated to images of Michael C. Hall's return as the legendary antihero. For the first time since the original series, James Remar is back as Dexter's adoptive father Harry.

There's some initial information about the plot as well: the series takes place a few weeks after "New Blood". Dexter is searching for his son Harrison (Jack Alcott).

However, his former colleague Angel Batista, played by David Zayas, is also on his trail.

Not on the pictures, but likewise involved, are "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris and "Jessica Jones" actress Krysten Ritter. Jimmy Smits as Miguel Prado and, above all, John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer will also make brief appearances. The two may appear in a flashback or a hallucination.

So the "Dexter" franchise lives on – and according to Michael C. Hall and showrunner Clyde Phillips, it shall remain that way. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the two emphasize that they would like to keep the story going beyond "Dexter: Resurrection". A second season has also already been confirmed for the prequel "Original Sin". But first, "Dexter: Resurrection" is coming to Paramount Plus this summer.

The Original Series: Dexter

"Dexter" is one of the most fascinating and controversial series of the 2000s. The Showtime production, which originally ran from 2006 to 2013, tells the story of a man who works as a forensic scientist for the Miami police during the day - and passes his own bloody sentence on other killers as a serial killer at night.

The Plot of "Dexter"

At the center of it all is Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C. Hall, who delivers one of his strongest performances in this role. Dexter is charming, intelligent – and by his own account incapable of feeling real emotions. As a child, he had traumatic experiences that are said to have driven him to develop a lust for murder. His adoptive father Harry, himself a policeman, recognizes Dexter's dark tendencies early on and gives him a code: if he has to kill, then only those who, in Harry's opinion, "deserve it" – in other words, murderers who have slipped through the system.

"Dexter" and Morals

What follows is a fascinating game of morality: Is Dexter a hero or a monster? How long can you hide in a dual function as investigator and perpetrator? And does the series manage to lure the viewer over to the killer's side?

"Dexter" clearly stands out from classic crime dramas. Not only does the series work as a thrilling murder hunt, but also as a profound character study of a man who is internally conflicted. Dexter regularly conducts inner monologues in which we are directly immersed in his world of thought – a brilliant way of making the viewer empathize with him despite his cruel deeds. You actually want to condemn him, but then you still hope that he gets away with it.

Season Hightlights and Criticism

Especially powerful are the first four seasons, in which Dexter encounters characters such as the "Ice Truck Killer" and the iconic "Trinity Killer" (played by John Lithgow). The suspense, psychological depth and clever storytelling reached its peak here. The subsequent seasons were met with more mixed reactions. Above all, the series finale in 2013 divided the fan community – many found the ending to be unsatisfying.

"Dexter" is more than a mere classic crime series: it is a profound, dark journey into the psyche of a man who lives with his demons but is searching for a moral guide. The series has won a number of awards, sparked debate, intrigued, and disturbed – and has long since become legendary.
