"Fantastic Four: First Steps" director Matt Shakman has found his next project – and he's diving right into one of the most acclaimed blockbuster franchises of all time. As reported by Deadline magazine, he will be directing a new "Planet of the Apes" film.

Josh Friedman, who also wrote the script for the latest "Planet of the Apes" installment, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes", is serving as screenwriter. Concrete details about the plot are currently being kept under wraps. All that is known so far is that the story returns to Earth, where apes continue to be the dominant species.

Although official confirmation is still pending, insider sources assume that the new film is not a sequel to "Kingdom" Instead, Shakman and Friedman are developing a completely new story within the franchise. A release date has not yet been announced. But we'll keep you posted, of course!

The Fascination of the "Planet of the Apes" Series

The "Planet of the Apes" film series is one of the most famous science fiction franchises in film history. Since the first film in 1968, the series has captivated audiences with thrilling stories, philosophical questions, and spectacular imagery. It's not just about apes taking over the Earth, but also explores themes like power, war, science, and the relationship between humans and nature. Over the decades, the series has been repeatedly reimagined and modernized.

The Beginning of a Science Fiction Classic

The first film in the series, "Planet of the Apes", is based on the novel "La Planète des singes" by French author Pierre Boulle. The plot follows astronaut George Taylor, played by Charlton Heston, who, after a crash landing on an alien planet, discovers that intelligent apes rule over primitive humans there.

The film was revolutionary for its time. The elaborate makeup, in particular, caused quite a stir back then and was even awarded an Honorary Oscar. But it wasn't just the technology that made the film a success. The surprising ending is still considered one of the most famous in film history. The scene with the Statue of Liberty became a symbol warning against human self-destruction.

Social Criticism and Philosophical Themes

An important reason for the series' enduring success lies in its social depth. Numerous political and philosophical messages are hidden behind the science fiction plot. The films deal with prejudice, discrimination, war, and the abuse of power.

The apes often mirror human societies. There are authoritarian rulers, religious fanatics, and scientists fighting against rigid systems. This forces the viewer to reflect on human behavior. Especially in times of political tension, the series has always felt relevant. The question of the relationship between humans and animals also plays a major role. The films show how thin the line between civilization and violence can be. At the same time, they raise the question of whether humans are truly morally superior.

The sequels to the classic series

Following the huge success of the first film, several sequels were produced. These include "Beneath the Planet of the Apes", "Escape from the Planet of the Apes", "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes", and "Battle for the Planet of the Apes".

The quality of the films was met with mixed reviews, yet the series developed a loyal fan base. It was particularly interesting that the later films increasingly addressed social conflicts. Themes such as oppression, revolution, and social inequality took center stage. In the 1970s, a television series and animated productions were also created. As a result, "Planet of the Apes" became a permanent fixture of pop culture.

Tim Burton's Remake

In 2001, director Tim Burton attempted a modern reboot with a remake. The film "Planet of the Apes", starring Mark Wahlberg in the lead role, relied more heavily on spectacular effects and action. Reactions to the remake were mixed, however. The costumes and makeup were particularly praised, while the plot and the ending disappointed many viewers. Nevertheless, the film demonstrated that there was still significant interest in the franchise.

The successful reboot starting in 2011

It wasn't until "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" that the series achieved a truly successful reboot. The film tells the backstory of the intelligent chimpanzee Caesar, who develops extraordinary intelligence through a drug. Caesar was portrayed by Andy Serkis using modern motion-capture technology. The new trilogy placed much greater emphasis on emotional characters and realistic special effects. At the same time, the socially critical aspect remained intact. The films depict the slow collapse of human civilization and the rise of the apes.

"Rise" was followed by "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and "War for the Planet of the Apes". The character Caesar, in particular, was celebrated by critics and fans alike. He is not a classic hero or villain, but a tragic figure who attempts to bring about peace between humans and apes.

Modern Technology and Visual Masterpieces

The newer films are considered milestones in the field of digital effects. Through motion capture, the actors were able to transfer their emotions directly to the ape characters. As a result, the characters appear surprisingly lifelike and believable. Andy Serkis, in particular, has received widespread praise for his portrayal of Caesar. Many experts view his performance as an important step toward the recognition of digital acting in Hollywood.

The films' production also became significantly more realistic than in older science fiction works. The apes move naturally, their facial expressions appear emotional, and the world seems believable. This allowed viewers to identify even more strongly with the characters.

The Significance of the Series Today

Even decades after the first film, "Planet of the Apes" remains relevant. The series combines entertainment with profound questions about humanity, responsibility, and the handling of power. Modern issues such as environmental destruction, artificial intelligence, and social division make the films seem more relevant than ever.

The story was most recently continued with "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes". The film demonstrates that the franchise still has great potential and continues to captivate new generations of viewers. The "Planet of the Apes" series is thus far more than mere science fiction entertainment. It is one of the few film series that combines thrilling adventures with social relevance. That is precisely why it has secured its place in film history to this day.
