Fans of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" should remember this date! Season 2 of the fantasy series starts on Netflix on June 25, 2026.

The live-action adaptation of the animated series of the same name is set in a world threatened by the terrifying Fire Nation. The focus is on 12-year-old Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier). The series follows the boy on his journey to master the four elements of fire, water, earth and air in order to restore balance in this world.

In the first season, he managed to bend the water. The second season takes him to the Earth Kingdom. There he and his friends Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) want to secure the support of the Earth King - and he wants to succeed in bending another element with the Earth.

A popular newcomer joins the cast in season 2 of Avatar

In addition to old acquaintances, there will also be some newcomers in season 2. These include Toph Beifong, played by Miya Cech. The blind heroine is a fan favorite in the animated series and will now also be part of the ensemble in Netflix's live-action version. The other cast members of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" include Dallas Liu, Elizabeth Yu, Momona Tamada, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Maria Zhang and Daniel Dae Kim. The live-action series was developed by Albert Kim. He was also responsible as showrunner for the first season. However, executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani have now taken the helm instead, as Variety reports.

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" premiered on Netflix in February 2024. The series was subsequently extended for two more seasons. The third season is also set to be the last.

There had already been a change of showrunners beforehand

Originally, the live-action version of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" was to be created under the direction of Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. The two are the creators of the original animated series, for which they also served as showrunners. However, they eventually left the Netflix production due to creative differences. When Albert Kim took over instead in 2021, he couldn't believe it at first. He asked himself: "Why? What is there I could do or say with the story that wasn't done or said in the original?"

Despite his initial misgivings about not being able to add anything significant to a new edition, he accepted the challenge. On the one hand, he wanted to add a "new visual dimension" to the world of "Avatar" using visual effects. On the other hand, he saw the potential in the remake to give the story and emotions more room to unfold.

Kim initially watched the animated series with his daughter - but only because she was still too young to fully understand the story. He wanted to support her with fatherly explanations. However, he became an enthusiastic viewer himself and was increasingly carried away by the action, humor and story of "Avatar: The Last Airbender".

Various remakes and sequels

The Netflix remake is not the first live-action version. In 2010, director and screenwriter M. Night Shyamalan made the film "The Last Airbender". It was actually supposed to be the first part of a trilogy. However, Shyamalan's interpretation of the material was torn to shreds by the critics. The planned sequels were eventually put on ice.

The animated series, on the other hand, is still very popular today. It originally ran from 2005 to 2008, during which time the series ran for three seasons with a total of 61 episodes. A sequel, "The Legend of Korra", followed from 2012 to 2014. This animated series was also well received and comprises four seasons with a total of 52 episodes. With "Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender", another sequel is now planned, this time in the form of an animated film. Originally, the film was supposed to be released in cinemas. However, it is now set to premiere on Paramount+ in fall 2026 instead.
