The "Killer Klowns From Outer Space" are returning – at least according to business insider TheInsneider. According to the report, a remake of the sci-fi horror comedy from the 80s is in the pipeline. The film is to be produced by none other than Hollywood superstar Ryan Gosling!

The quirky 80s film has become a cult classic over the years. The story revolves around a group of alien clowns who land in a small American town. They have a firm goal: they want to cocoon people in cotton candy and eat them.

This silly B-movie idea still delights fans to this day with its handmade special effects, 80s charm and a peculiar mix of horror, trash and slapstick. Behind the movie were the brothers Charles and Stephen Chiodo.

According to TheInsneider, the remake is currently in development at Amazon MGM. A sequel to the popular movie was repeatedly under discussion. The last time around, the Chiodo brothers unsuccessfully attempted a series adaptation. Now, however, a film remake is to be made. No details were given by Sneider about the cast or a director. With Ryan Gosling, however, there would already be plenty of star talent involved – even if he's likely only working behind the scenes as a producer.

Science Fiction Cult Classics of the 80s

Blade Runner

Ridley Scott's dark vision of the future is still one of the most stylistically influential science fiction films of all time. In a rainy, neon-lit megacity, Harrison Ford as Blade Runner hunts artificial humans, so-called replicants. "Blade Runner" is visually breathtaking, philosophically profound and has an unforgettable Vangelis soundtrack – a must-see! The sequel "Blade Runner 2049" by "Dune" and "Arrival" director Denis Villeneuve is also worth watching.

The Thing

John Carpenter's chilling horror trip is set in an Antarctic research station where an extraterrestrial being can take shape – thus causing paranoia and mistrust among the scientists. With Kurt Russell in the lead role and incredibly good practical effects, "The Thing" is a suspenseful sci-fi horror that gets under the skin.

RoboCop

Paul Verhoeven's brutal future satire about a police officer who is turned into a cyborg is far more than just action – it is social criticism, media satire and hard-hitting sci-fi cult all in one. "RoboCop" shines with an iconic main character, sharp humor and plenty of 80s charm.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

An alien is stranded on Earth and befriends a boy. "E.T." is one of the most emotional sci-fi movies of all time and a prime example of the magical movies of the 80s. It was, of course, directed by one of the greatest directors of all time: Steven Spielberg.

Aliens

Sigourney Weaver returns as Ellen Ripley! A perfect blend of sci-fi and action that catapulted the "Alien" franchise in a new direction. "Aliens" is one of the most popular sequels ever – especially because the movie does its own thing and doesn't just copy the original. While Ridley Scott's "Alien" from 1979 was more of a sci-fi horror film, James Cameron devoted himself more to the action genre. The "Alien" franchise lives on to this day: soon, a first "Alien" series awaits us with "Alien: Earth". Our series preview gives you a full look at the upcoming sci-fi highlight:

The Terminator

A killer cyborg from the future (Arnold Schwarzenegger) travels back to the year 1984 to stop humanity before it even rebels against the machines. "The Terminator" is dark, style-forming and the beginning of one of the most famous franchises of all time. Several sequels followed. "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" is particularly popular.

Tron

A computer game programmer is digitized and fights for survival in a virtual world. In terms of technology, "Tron" was ahead of its time and laid the foundation for later sci-fi blockbusters about virtual realities. After "Tron: Legacy", the third part of the series will be released this year with "Tron: Ares".

Predator

Arnold Schwarzenegger against an invisible alien in the jungle – it sounds like a simple action movie, but there's more to it than that. "Predator" impresses with its thrilling atmosphere, iconic design of the titular creature and a clever mix of sci-fi, survival thriller and 80s macho action. "Predator" marked the first appearance of one of the most iconic aliens in film history. By the way, an animated film called "Predator: Killer of Killers" is due later this year.
