The Amazing Spider-Man 3: Andrew Garfield Sets a Condition for a Possible Comeback

While "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is currently dominating the box office worldwide, Andrew Garfield has now also commented on a possible return as Peter Parker – but only under one very specific condition.

On The Playlist's podcast "The Discourse", he explained that he would only be interested in returning if the project dared to do something completely unusual. For him, a new "Spider-Man" movie would have to be radically different from anything audiences have seen so far in the superhero genre. To that end, he even floated an unusual suggestion himself: a "Spider-Man" road trip movie.

The big question, of course, remains whether Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios would be willing to bring a "Logan"-style film to life in the "Spider-Man" universe. In our opinion, however, a lack of fan interest shouldn't be a stumbling block. After all, the "Spider-Verse" films also broke new ground in both visuals and storytelling.

With "The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012) and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro" (2014), Sony Pictures launched a new attempt in the early 2010s to establish "Spider-Man" on the big screen. Following the conclusion of Sam Raimi's successful trilogy starring Tobey Maguire, the studio decided surprisingly quickly to completely reboot the series. Andrew Garfield took on the lead role, offering a significantly more modern and emotional interpretation of the famous Marvel hero.

Although the film series consists of only two installments and never received the originally planned conclusion, it has secured a firm place among the "Spider-Man" film adaptations over the years. Above all, Garfield's portrayal of Peter Parker is particularly cherished by many fans today.

A Modern Reboot for Spider-Man

The first film, "The Amazing Spider-Man", was released in 2012 and directed by Marc Webb, who had previously made a name for himself with the romantic drama "500 Days of Summer". This casting decision alone showed that Sony wanted to take a different approach than with the previous trilogy. Instead of a classic comic book adventure, the goal was to create a film that focused more on the characters.

The film retells Peter Parker's origin story, but focuses less on the character's well-known milestones and more on his personal development and family background. At the same time, it introduces Gwen Stacy as a central character, played by Emma Stone. Her relationship with Peter Parker forms the emotional core of the entire series.

Visually, the film adopted a more modern style than the Raimi films. The action felt more dynamic, the camerawork more fluid, and "Spider-Man's" movements through New York were staged with particular elaboration. The decision to have Peter develop his own web-shooters was also more closely aligned with the source comics.

Garfield's chemistry with Emma Stone, who became his real-life partner off-screen, was particularly praised. Many viewers found their on-screen chemistry exceptionally natural and believable. As a result, the love story between Peter and Gwen gained an emotional intensity that many fans still consider one of the greatest strengths of both films.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Bigger, More Spectacular, and More Ambitious

With "The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro", Sony continued the story in 2014 and significantly expanded the narrative scope. The film introduced several new characters, including Electro and Harry Osborn, while also hinting at plans for a more expansive "Spider-Man" cinematic universe.

At the time, the studio wanted to build its own network of Spider-Man films, similar to what Marvel Studios did with the MCU. Among other things, spin-offs featuring the "Sinister Six" and other well-known characters from the "Spider-Man" universe were planned. These ambitions are clearly reflected in the second film, which sets up numerous plot threads and future developments.

Technically, the film was one of the most elaborate comic book adaptations of its time. The special effects, the depiction of New York, and the action-packed "Spider-Man" sequences received widespread praise. At the same time, however, the film was also criticized for trying to cram too many characters and ideas into a single movie.

Why the Series Ended After Two Films

Despite strong box office results, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" fell short of Sony's expectations. Above all, the mixed critical reception and uncertainty about the franchise's future direction led to the planned sequels and spin-offs ultimately being shelved.

Instead, Sony reached an agreement with Marvel Studios, integrating "Spider-Man" into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland took over the role of Peter Parker and made his debut in 2016's "Captain America: Civil War". This brought the Amazing series to an end sooner than originally planned.

The Films' Late Rediscovery

In the years following their release, the two films received increasingly positive reviews. Many fans began to appreciate the emotional depth, the strong portrayal of Peter Parker, and the relationship between Peter and Gwen more fully. In retrospect, Andrew Garfield's humorous yet vulnerable "Spider-Man" also gained popularity.

This reevaluation received a decisive boost from "Spider-Man: No Way Home" (2021). Garfield's return as "Spider-Man" was enthusiastically received by audiences and led many viewers to rediscover the two "Amazing" films.
