The Minions are back: In "Minions & Monsters," the yellow fan favorites will return to theaters this summer. The entertainment magazine Empire is now offering a fresh look at the prequel. According to the report, the film includes a roughly 15-minute sequence in which only the typical Minion language can be heard. Nevertheless, viewers will of course still be able to understand their intentions and feelings, as director Pierre Coffin emphasizes.

"The whole point of it is that you don't understand them when they speak – but you understand them nonetheless."

According to Coffin, the Minions were inspired by classic silent film stars from the very beginning. "Minions & Monsters" now fittingly features the iconic yellow characters in Hollywood's silent film era. The Minions take Hollywood by storm, becoming movie stars, but at the same time unleash monsters upon the world. As a result, they must clean up the chaos they've caused.

So the new film is not a sequel, but rather a spin-off or prequel. The familiar main characters from the previous films – Kevin, Stuart, and Bob – are not the focus this time. Instead, the film revolves around entirely new characters. In a separate article, we've taken a closer look at all the details and unanswered questions.

You'll soon be able to see the new Minions adventure on the big screen. "Minions & Monsters" hits theaters on July 1, 2026. Until then, you can watch the latest trailer here!

From supporting characters to a global phenomenon

The anticipation for "Minions & Monsters" shows once again the cult status these little yellow creatures have achieved. Originally intended as supporting characters for "Despicable Me," the Minions evolved into a pop culture phenomenon within just a few years.

In the "Despicable Me" series, they serve as the loyal sidekicks of supervillain Gru. Even after the first film, it became clear that they often received more attention from the audience than the actual main characters. Their slapstick antics, childlike curiosity, and enthusiasm quickly made them the secret stars of the series.

A distinctive feature was their language. The so-called "Minionese" dialogues consist of an imaginative mix of different languages, sound effects, and made-up words. Although their sentences usually don't make much sense, viewers almost always understand what the characters are trying to express – a principle that is revisited in the new film.

The Road to Their Own Movies

The characters' success eventually led to the Minions getting their own film series. They took the lead role for the first time in the 2015 film "Minions." The film told their backstory and introduced the idea that the Minions have existed since time immemorial and are always on the lookout for the greatest and most impressive master to serve.

In 2022, "Minions: The Rise of Gru" followed as another prequel, depicting the early relationship between the Minions and the young Gru. Together with the films in the "Despicable Me" series, this resulted in one of the most successful animated franchises in the world.

What Makes the Minions So Special

The Minions' success cannot be explained by their appearance alone. Rather, they combine several qualities that make them appealing to people of all ages. First, the characters are intentionally simple in design. Their rounded shapes, large eyes, and expressive faces make their emotions instantly recognizable. Joy, fear, surprise, and mischievous delight are often conveyed without the need for words.

Their humor is another key factor. The Minions follow the tradition of classic slapstick comedy. Mishaps, chase scenes, exaggerated reactions, and physical comedy work regardless of language or culture. As a result, audiences around the world can laugh at the same scenes.

At the same time, the Minions possess an almost childlike view of the world. They are impulsive, curious, and frequently get themselves into trouble. Despite their mistakes, however, they rarely come across as malicious or calculating. Even when they cause chaos, it is usually the result of excitement or ignorance rather than bad intentions. This combination of clumsiness and goodwill makes them highly endearing.

Finally, the Minions have long since expanded beyond the world of cinema. They can be found on toys, clothing, in video games, and in countless internet memes. Their exaggerated facial expressions and absurd humor have become a staple of online culture and social media.

More than fifteen years after their debut, the Minions are far more than mere supporting characters in an animated franchise. They have become a cultural phenomenon in their own right – and their enduring popularity suggests that audiences still can't get enough of the little yellow troublemakers.
