Russian immigrant Sergei Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is a big game hunter, but sees himself as a protector of nature. As an animal lover, many creatures are closer to him than humans. This may also be due to the fact that his father (Russell Crowe) abandoned him at a young age (Levi Miller) and favored his half-brother Dmitri (Fred Hechinger) instead. As adults, fate brings them together again. By this time, Sergei has built up his alter ego as Kraven the Hunter, whom the animals serve in his particular brand of warfare.

Background

The development of "Kraven the Hunter" had a long history. Sam Raimi was already planning to include the character in his fourth Spider-Man film before this project was canceled. Later, Sony Pictures hinted at Kraven in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as part of their plans for a shared universe based on their Marvel rights. When Sony and Marvel Studios partnered for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony began developing their own universe, Sony's Spider-Man Universe, in which a Kraven movie was also being considered.

Richard Wenk was hired to write a script in August 2018, with the idea of an adaptation of the comic Kraven's Last Hunt being discussed. Jon Watts, the director of the more recent Spider-Man films, also expressed interest in featuring Kraven in an MCU movie. In the end, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway took on the script, and J. C. Chandor entered negotiations as director. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was cast in the lead role in May 2021, after Sony had previously considered other actors. In addition to Taylor-Johnson, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Ariana DeBose and Russell Crowe were cast in other important roles.

The original theatrical release was scheduled for January 2023 and was later postponed to October 6, 2023 and then to August 30, 2024, before being rescheduled again to December 12, 2024 due to the strike by the actors' union SAG-AFTRA. The German-language dubbing was produced by Iyuno Germany under the direction of Björn Schalla. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has signed up to play Kraven in several films. The film has already received a nomination for the Golden Raspberry 2025 for Worst Remake or Cheapest Copy.
