The third season of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is set to premiere sooner than expected. The new episodes of the fantasy series are scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video later this year, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Previously, it was widely assumed that season three would premiere in 2027. However, a source close to the production has now revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that it is set to premiere sooner.

Unlike Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" films, the series takes place thousands of years earlier: in the Second Age of Middle-earth. The story follows the creation of the titular rings and the rise of the villain Sauron. The third season of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is set to take place several years after the events of Season Two—at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron.

The most recent episode of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" aired in October 2024 on Amazon Prime Video. Several characters from previous seasons will return in the new episodes. Among others, Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Charlie Vickers as Sauron, and Robert Aramayo as Elrond are back on board for the third season. New additions include Eddie Marsan, Andrew Richardson, Zubin Varla, Adam Young, and Jamie Campbell Bower, who is best known for his role in "Stranger Things." J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay serve as showrunners for "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."

The Lord of the Rings: Two new films planned

Whenever exactly the third season premieres, "Lord of the Rings" fans can look forward to the future of Middle-earth with excitement. That's because, in addition to new episodes of "The Rings of Power," two new films are currently in the works. Just recently, the lead actors for "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" were announced. Andy Serkis, who is directing the film, will once again portray Gollum via motion capture. Other returning cast members include Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Lee Pace will reprise his role as Thranduil, as he did in Peter Jackson's "Hobbit" films. New to the cast, however, is Kate Winslet—the "Titanic" star will play Marigol.

One actor who will not be returning to Middle-earth is Viggo Mortensen. Instead, Aragorn will be portrayed by Jamie Dornan, whom many viewers will likely recognize as Christian Grey from the film adaptation of the bestseller "Fifty Shades of Grey." Leo Woodall had previously been repeatedly mentioned for the role. As is now known, however, the actor will not be seen as Aragorn, but as Halvard.

"The Hunt for Gollum" is associated with the events of Peter Jackson's first "Lord of the Rings" film, "The Fellowship of the Ring," released in 2001. Aragorn is set to play a key role: in this new fantasy adventure, he will embark on a quest to find Gollum. "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" hits theaters on December 17, 2027.

Shadow of the Past: Inspired by The Fellowship of the Ring

In addition, another "Lord of the Rings" film is in the works: "The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past." Interestingly, the project got its start with late-night TV star Stephen Colbert. The TV host came up with the idea for the film after reading six chapters from the first "Lord of the Rings" book, "The Fellowship of the Ring." Those chapters did not appear in Peter Jackson's film trilogy. So Colbert thought: That part of the book should also be brought to the big screen. Jackson was taken with the idea—and now Colbert and Jackson are working with Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh to shape the concept into a new "Lord of the Rings" film.

The story of "The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past" is set 14 years after the passing of Frodo. Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam's daughter Elanor discovers a long-kept secret and wants to find out why the War of the Ring was almost lost before it had even begun. Aside from that, much remains unclear about the film, including the release date, which has not yet been announced. We'll keep you posted!

Now it's official: "Sinners" star Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler have been confirmed for the new "Miami Vice" movie. At the same time, the reboot from "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski has been given a new title that already reveals the story's setting: "Miami Vice '85".

Here's what Miami Vice '85 is about

This makes one thing clear: we're heading back to the '80s! According to initial reports, the film's plot will be based on the pilot and the first season of the original series. The focus will be on the corruption and glamour of 1980s Miami.

The cast of Miami Vice '85

Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan will take on the role of Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs. In the cult series, the character was played by Philip Michael Thomas. In Michael Mann's 2006 film adaptation of the same name, Jamie Foxx portrayed Tubbs. His partner James "Sonny" Crockett has previously been played by Don Johnson and Colin Farrell – Austin Butler will now follow in their footsteps.

When will the film be released?

The script comes from "Nightcrawler" director Dan Gilroy, who most recently won an Emmy Award for his work as a writer on the "Star Wars" series "Andor." "F1" director Kosinski is shooting "Miami Vice '85" for IMAX. According to insider sources, the film's budget was recently approved by executives. Media reports indicate that filming is set to begin later this year, presumably in the fall of 2026. The release date for the Universal film has already been set: "Miami Vice '85" will hit theaters on August 6, 2027.

© Universal Television

The cult series from the '80s

The film is based on the legendary 1980s series "Miami Vice," which was co-developed and stylistically shaped by Michael Mann. The show was far more than a classic cop series: with its iconic soundtrack, pastel-colored suits, and visual style that was revolutionary at the time, it redefined an entire decade of television. The stories of undercover cops Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs combined crime plots with an almost music-video-like style – a trademark that continues to resonate today.

Miami Vice (2006): Michael Mann's first film adaptation

In 2006, Michael Mann returned to the source material with the film version of "Miami Vice." The film, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, adopted a significantly more realistic, dark tone and largely dispensed with the pop-cultural glamour of the series. Instead, it features digital night imagery, a sober look at the drug trade, and an almost documentary-like approach. Although the film polarized audiences upon its release, it is now regarded as a stylistically influential work in modern crime cinema.

© Universal Pictures

Michael B. Jordan

Michael B. Jordan, one of the most sought-after actors of his generation, is now taking on the role of Rico Tubbs. Jordan became world-famous through films like "Creed" and "Black Panther" and also demonstrated his talent as a director with "Creed III." He also played an early role in the HBO series "The Wire" and starred in "Fruitvale Station."

Most recently, Jordan delivered a standout performance in "Sinners." For Ryan Coogler's film, he won an Academy Award. Another remake is on the horizon for Jordan: In "The Thomas Crown Affair," he will take on a leading role alongside Adria Arjona – and will also direct the film.

<picture><img src="https://cdn.kinocheck.com/i/w=360/8jjgvbe2d2.jpg" alt="Image of SINNERS Trailer (2025) Michael B.
Austin Butler

Jordan's on-screen partner will be Austin Butler, who has been considered a Hollywood star at least since his Oscar-nominated performance in "Elvis." Butler also delivered a standout performance in Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." His performance in "Dune 2" also remains memorable.

Director Joseph Kosinski

Director Joseph Kosinski has established himself in recent years as a specialist in visually stunning blockbuster cinema. His debut with "Tron: Legacy" was followed by productions such as "Oblivion" with Tom Cruise and the global hit "Top Gun: Maverick." Most recently, he directed the Formula 1 film "F1" starring superstar Brad Pitt.

With this combination of an iconic source material, modern star power, and a director with a flair for grand visuals, the odds are good that "Miami Vice '85" will not only tap into nostalgic feelings but also redefine the brand for a new generation. So we can look forward to seeing what awaits us in theaters in August 2027.

After "Heart Eyes" won over both critics and moviegoers, the infamous killer who strikes on Valentine's Day is officially returning. Deadline has now announced the release date for "Heart Eyes 2".

The sequel will hit theaters right on time for Valentine's Day on February 11, 2028. Josh Ruben will once again take the director's chair.
Heart-pounding thrills and goosebumps: The best slasher recommendations for fans of "Heart Eyes"

The success of "Heart Eyes" has shown that the slasher film genre is more alive than ever. The mix of a romantic undertone, a dash of humor, and the relentless threat of a masked killer has struck a chord. While fans eagerly await the sequel in 2028, the question arises of how to bridge the waiting period with similar films. A good slasher today is no longer defined solely by crude violence, but often captivates with clever meta-commentary, likable characters, and a dense atmosphere.

© Sony Pictures

Playing with the date: "Holiday horror" as a subgenre

"Heart Eyes" uses Valentine's Day as a bloody backdrop. This motif has a long tradition in horror films. Anyone who loves this combination of holiday romance and terror can't miss the classic "My Bloody Valentine" (both the 1981 original and the 2009 3D remake). Here, it's a miner with a pickaxe who disrupts the festivities in a small town. The film shares with "Heart Eyes" the dark aesthetic and the creative use of Valentine's Day symbolism for the kills.

Eli Roth's modern classic "Thanksgiving" follows a similar vein. What began as a fake trailer became a full-fledged slasher film that shows how a small-town holiday turns into a massacre due to a trauma from the past. Fans of "Heart Eyes" will appreciate the blend of modern production values and classic slasher craftsmanship here.

Slasher with Heart and Brain: The Meta-Level

One reason for the popularity of "Heart Eyes" is the chemistry between the characters, which often goes beyond the mere "cannon fodder" of older films. The "Happy Deathday" series is a prime example here. These films combine the slasher motif with a time-loop theme. The protagonist, Tree Gelbman, must relive the day of her own death over and over again until she unmasks her killer. Just like "Heart Eyes", this film plays with the audience's expectations and uses humor to lighten the tension at times without undermining the seriousness of the threat.

Another must-see for fans of Olivia Holt and modern slasher queens is the film "Freaky". In this body-swap comedy, a shy girl swaps bodies with a notorious serial killer. The film is gory, extremely funny, and offers a fresh perspective on the genre by turning classic role patterns upside down – an approach that "Heart Eyes" also takes with its modern setting.

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

The Big City Atmosphere: Urban Horror

"Heart Eyes" uses the backdrop of Seattle (or a comparable metropolis) to create a sense of isolation amidst a crowd. Anyone looking for that urban slasher vibe should check out "Scream 6". Moving the Ghostface murders from the small town of Woodsboro to New York City has given the franchise a whole new dynamic. The subway scene perfectly illustrates how a killer exploits the anonymity of the big city to lull his victims into a false sense of security. The blend of investigative work, friendship dynamics, and high-speed chases reflects many elements that fans appreciate in "Heart Eyes".

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

Insider Tips for Connoisseurs

Beyond the big blockbusters, there are smaller productions that capture the same spirit. "Haunt" (2019) is one such candidate. A group of friends visits an extreme haunted house on Halloween, only to discover that the dangers there are very real. The film has a dense atmosphere and relies on handmade effects that will make any slasher fan's heart race.

For those who particularly enjoyed the romantic elements of "Heart Eyes," "Totally Killer" comes highly recommended. The film blends slasher elements with a time-travel comedy set in the 1980s. It explores the differences between today's sensibilities and the "wild" slasher era of the past, while also offering a thrilling chase after a masked killer.

Conclusion

The slasher genre has evolved tremendously in recent years. It's no longer just the genre of dark alleys, but takes place at brightly lit Valentine's Day parties, in time loops, or on social media. Fans of "Heart Eyes" have plenty of options to pass the time until 2028. Whether you prefer classic holiday horror films or lean toward clever meta-comedy – the thrill remains the same. In the end, it's the mix of likable characters you want to see survive and an iconic killer that makes for a truly great slasher. So grab the popcorn (and maybe someone to hold onto), because the next shock is just a stream away.

Who is Clayface?

Clayface first appeared in comics in the 1940s. Since then, there have been several versions with different civilian names and origin stories. However, all incarnations are Batman's adversaries. Clayface has the ability to change his shape at will. These powers make him a dangerous and unpredictable opponent in battle. However, he can also mimic other people exactly to carry out his sinister plans with cunning and deceit.

According to initial reports, the film's story will center on the second Clayface, named Matt Hagen. He is a failed actor whose face is disfigured by a gangster. He therefore turns to a scientist to restore his appearance. But the treatment goes wrong: contact with an experimental chemical transforms the protagonist into a monster.

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

Behind the Scenes

Over the years, Clayface has been reinterpreted numerous times in comics, animated series, and video games. Now, director James Watkins and screenwriters Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini are tackling their own version. Both filmmakers are primarily at home in the horror genre. Watkins has directed films such as "Speak No Evil" with James McAvoy and "The Woman in Black" with Daniel Radcliffe. Horror expert Flanagan has made a name for himself with films like "Doctor Sleep" and several hit series such as "The Haunting of Hill House" and "Midnight Mass". "Clayface" is being produced by, among others, "The Batman" mastermind Matt Reeves.

The Cast

Tom Rhys Harries will take on the lead role. The actor has previously appeared mostly in supporting roles. Among other projects, he was part of the cast of Guy Ritchie's "The Gentlemen." He also appeared in the Apple TV+ series "Suspicion".

The scientist Dr. Caitlin Bates is a character written specifically for the film. She is played by Naomi Ackie. According to initial reports, her character is the CEO of a startup. Her fiancé John, on the other hand, is a detective portrayed by actor Max Minghella. Also joining the cast is the well-known supporting actor Eddie Marsan.

A Horror Film in the DCU

Compared to the other films in the DCU, "Clayface" is supposed to be something completely different, according to James Gunn. It's important to him that not every film is made in the style of "Superman". Instead, Gunn prefers to work with different filmmakers who have distinct visions for his DCU projects. This is intended to prevent the audience from getting bored with the same old approach.

"Clayface" is even said to be a true horror film. That's why we're particularly interested in the perspective from which the film will be told: Will we stay close to the villain and experience a tragic story like in "Joker"? But how will the horror aspect work if there's no eerie external threat?

Reportedly, the film is meant to evoke David Cronenberg's body horror classic "The Fly". That film focuses primarily on how the slow transformation of one's own body turns a person into a monster bit by bit – both physically and behaviorally. We experience both the villain's story and that of the people around him – in the case of "Clayface", presumably the scientist and the detective.

In our opinion, the character likely won't fully transform into the familiar monster until the end of the film. This also explains why Batman has not yet appeared in the story. We're eagerly awaiting to see what actually awaits us in the end. The theatrical release of "Clayface" is scheduled for October 23.

Anticipation for "The Devil Wears Prada 2" is high, but fans of Sydney Sweeney are now facing a major setback. Although the "Euphoria" star had already filmed several scenes for the sequel, she will not appear in the final cut. This appears to be the result of a creative decision by the filmmakers.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the decision to remove the roughly three-minute scene was by no means a judgment on Sweeney's performance. Rather, the sequence did not fit structurally with the rest of the film. However, the team explicitly emphasized how grateful they were for the collaboration with the actress.

In the deleted scene, Sweeney would have played herself. Emily Blunt's character heads the U.S. branch of the fashion house Dior in the sequel, and Sweeney would have appeared there as a prominent client during a fitting. Some industry insiders, however, speculate that Sweeney's deleted appearance might also be linked to her commercial for American Eagle last year. Critics at the time interpreted an unfortunate choice of words in the campaign as a tasteless allusion – an accusation that sparked heated discussions on social media.

The lead roles in "The Devil Wears Prada 2" will once again be played by Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt. We will also see Stanley Tucci reprise his role as Nigel Kipling. The film hits theaters on May 1.

Why "The Devil Wears Prada" Still Enjoys Cult Status Today

When "The Devil Wears Prada" hit theaters in 2006, many critics expected a lighthearted comedy about the superficiality of the fashion world. Instead, director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna created a timeless masterpiece that, two decades later, is not only a staple of pop culture but is considered one of the most influential films of the 2000s. The film's cult status is no accident, but the result of a perfect blend of sharp-tongued dialogue, iconic costume design, and a performance that set the bar.

© 20th Century Studios

Miranda Priestly: An Antagonist for the Ages

The heart of the film is undoubtedly Meryl Streep in her role as the aloof editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly. Streep made a conscious decision to portray Miranda not as a screaming fury, but as a quiet, precise, and utterly efficient powerhouse. Her infamous "That's all" became a catchphrase.

In particular, the "Cerulean monologue" scene, in which Miranda explains to the young Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) that her apparent indifference to fashion is actually the result of years of work by experts in that field, gave the film an unexpected depth. Miranda Priestly became the blueprint for the modern career woman who cannot afford to make mistakes in a male-dominated world, lending the film a feminist nuance that is more relevant today than ever.

The Evolution of Andy Sachs

Another reason for the film's longevity is the relatable character of Andy Sachs. Her journey from a "smart but poorly dressed" rookie journalist to a style-conscious assistant who ultimately realizes she is sacrificing her integrity for success resonated with an entire generation of young professionals.

Andy's transformation is also masterfully executed visually. Costume designer Patricia Field, who had already gained fame through "Sex and the City", created looks that are now shared millions of times on platforms like TikTok and Instagram as vintage inspiration. Whether it's the green Chanel coat or the iconic over-the-knee boots – the fashion in the film is a character in its own right, perfectly capturing the cultural zeitgeist of the 2000s.

A Reflection of the Workplace and Memes

Beyond the fashion, "The Devil Wears Prada" remains relevant today thanks to its biting humor. The dynamics in the Runway office, featuring Stanley Tucci as the wise Nigel and Emily Blunt as the chronically stressed Emily Charlton, provided countless quotes that dominate meme culture today. The film addresses toxic work environments, work-life balance, and the price one pays for career advancement. These universal themes ensure that even young viewers today – who weren't even born in 2006 – can relate to the power struggles between Miranda and her assistants.

Conclusion: Timeless Elegance

The fact that a sequel is now being produced nearly twenty years later underscores the original's enduring influence. "The Devil Wears Prada" is more than just a satire on the fashion industry; it is a precise study of power, ambition, and the significance of style. In a fast-paced world, this film is like a perfectly tailored Chanel suit: it never goes out of style.

"Top Gun 3" is a done deal—with Tom Cruise. However, one question remained: Will director Joseph Kosinski return as well? Now it seems the decision has been made: Kosinski will not be directing the third installment, as reported by Puck News. The director reportedly does not have the necessary time for "Top Gun 3" due to other projects, such as the "Miami Vice" reboot.

It was only recently confirmed at CinemaCon that Tom Cruise will be back on board. The same goes for blockbuster producer Jerry Bruckheimer. As for the choice of director, however, no name was mentioned. Consequently, speculation continued as to whether Joseph Kosinski might ultimately take the helm. After all, he had already directed the predecessor, "Top Gun: Maverick"—and landed a massive hit. But since Kosinski apparently isn't returning, speculation is now rife as to who will take the director's chair instead.

Top Gun 3: Search for a successor to Joseph Kosinski

A logical choice in many respects would be Christopher McQuarrie, as reported by MovieWeb. McQuarrie is already involved in the film series as a screenwriter. He is well-versed in filming elaborate action sequences and has also directed several films with Tom Cruise, including the latest installments of the "Mission: Impossible" series. However, only McQuarrie himself likely knows whether he has the time or is willing to direct "Top Gun 3." In any case, "Top Gun 3" has been in development for some time now. Ehren Kruger joined the project as a writer two years ago. He also co-wrote the screenplay for "Top Gun: Maverick" alongside Christopher McQuarrie and Eric Warren Singer.

Top Gun: Maverick was a huge success

The first film in the aviation action series was released back in 1986. The original film, "Top Gun," was directed by Tony Scott. Lead actor Tom Cruise took on the role of top pilot Pete Mitchell for the first time. With worldwide box office receipts of $357 million, "Top Gun" became a cinematic hit. Just how successful the sequel would become 36 years later, however, was quite astonishing. "Top Gun: Maverick" grossed nearly $1.5 billion—a massive financial success. Expectations for the planned third installment are likely to be correspondingly high.

Tom Cruise's return is likely to be a huge relief for everyone involved in "Top Gun 3." After all, the film series is primarily associated with the Hollywood star—Cruise is the face of "Top Gun." And a return was by no means a given. Since "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning" is considered the conclusion of the other major action franchise starring Tom Cruise, it could just as easily have been the case that he would have taken a general break from action films afterward. Especially in light of his upcoming film: As the lead actor in "Digger," audiences will soon see the Hollywood star from an unusual angle. According to Variety, in Alejandro G. Iñárritu's new directorial effort, he plays an "insane, cat-loving billionaire with a big belly, a comb over and a thick southern accent." Audiences will soon be able to see for themselves: "Digger" hits theaters on October 2, 2026. Despite his cinematic foray into more unusual territory, however, his planned return in "Top Gun 3" shows that Cruise hasn't given up on the action genre just yet.

Joseph Kosinski clearly has a knack for box office hits

Aside from Cruise, however, one should not underestimate the importance of Joseph Kosinski when it comes to the success of the "Top Gun" series. With "Top Gun: Maverick," he directed the most financially successful film of Cruise's career. Last year, he further cemented his status as a successful director with the racing drama "F1." With a worldwide box office gross of $634 million, he not only delivered another blockbuster—he also gave another veteran Hollywood star the most financially successful film of his career: Brad Pitt.

Ryan Reynolds on the Future of the Marvel Character

Reynolds also hints at a new project featuring the fan favorite

© 20th Century Studios

Is Ryan Reynolds ruling out a new "Deadpool" movie? In an interview on TODAY, the superstar spoke about his character's future. He hinted at a new project involving Deadpool – but at the same time, Reynolds also had some disappointing news for many fans.

The good news: Something has already been written regarding Deadpool. However, Reynolds didn't reveal which project he was referring to. The bad news: If Reynolds is to be believed, a new standalone "Deadpool" movie is currently quite unlikely. He had the following to say about his character:

"I don't think I am ever going to center him again. He is a supporting character. He is a guy who is great in a group."

His statement thus dampens hopes for "Deadpool 4" – but it doesn't necessarily mean the end of Wade Wilson. We'll have to wait and see which project Reynolds was hinting at.

© 20th Century Studios

Deadpool and the Avengers

Rumors also persist that Deadpool might appear in "Avengers: Doomsday." However, the fan favorite's appearance has not been confirmed. In the past, Reynolds has shared his clear vision for the character in relation to a possible encounter with the Avengers.

"Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can't be accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humor works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we're at the end of his journey."

Whether Deadpool will actually make a surprise appearance in "Avengers: Doomsday" remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that some of the original "X-Men" cast members will return. Here you can watch the "X-Men" teaser for the blockbuster again.

Deadpool: An Iconic Character

The version of the "merc with a mouth" portrayed by Ryan Reynolds has long since established itself as one of the most unconventional comic book adaptations in superhero cinema. Deadpool, whose real name is Wade Wilson, is no classic hero. His trademarks are dark humor, an extreme propensity for violence, and above all, constantly breaking the fourth wall. He comments on the action, speaks directly to the audience, and mercilessly pokes fun not only at the genre but also at himself.

At the same time, behind the façade of cynicism and irony lies a tragic figure whose physical and emotional scars repeatedly come to the surface. It is precisely this tension that makes Deadpool so unique – and also explains why Reynolds doesn't see him as a classic leader, but rather as a disruptive force within the system.

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

The First Deadpool Movie

With the 2016 "Deadpool" film, the character made the big leap to the big screen – against all odds. The film deliberately aimed for an R-rating, broke with conventional superhero conventions, and won over audiences with its irreverent tone. Instead of a shining hero, viewers got an anarchic anti-hero story that surprised both critics and audiences alike. The success was enormous and instantly cemented Deadpool as a major force in the comic book movie landscape.

The Sequel: Deadpool 2

The sequel, "Deadpool 2," further expanded on the concept. The film introduced new characters like Cable and Domino and played even more with team dynamics – a first indication that Deadpool works particularly well in collaboration with others. At the same time, the emotional depth was enhanced without losing the signature humor. Here, too, the film remained true to its style: brutal, meta, and surprisingly heartfelt.

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

The Big Leap into the MCU: Deadpool & Wolverine

"Deadpool & Wolverine" finally opened a new chapter. The film marks Deadpool's integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and brings him together with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine – a combination fans had long awaited. This duo in particular underscores Reynolds' statement: Deadpool's impact is particularly strong in contrast to other characters. His humor clashes with Wolverine's seriousness, creating dynamic tension and friction.

The Future of Deadpool

In addition to his solo adventures, Deadpool – at least in an early version – already appeared in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." However, this interpretation was met with criticism from fans and differs significantly from the later, successful version. With the transition to the MCU, numerous new possibilities for guest appearances and crossovers are now opening up. Perhaps this is where the character's future lies: less as a sole lead, and more as an unpredictable part of a larger ensemble.

Leatherface is back to strike fear into our hearts! As reported by the industry magazine Variety, a reboot of the horror classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is in the works – and a director has already been tapped.

Newcomer Curry Barker is set to helm the project. Barker is currently making a name for himself with the highly acclaimed horror film "Obsession", in which a young man unleashes a mystical power to force a girlfriend to love him.

The new version of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is described as a bold reinterpretation of the legendary 1974 original. However, more detailed information about Barker's vision is still under wraps. Behind the scenes, A24 will be handling production, having prevailed over notable competitors like Blumhouse to secure the project. A release date has not yet been announced.

Alongside the new feature film, a "Texas Chainsaw" TV series is currently in development, produced by Glen Powell. JT Mollner, known for "Strange Darling" among other projects, will direct.

The Roar of the Chainsaw: The New Status of the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" Franchise

The year 2026 marks a decisive turning point for one of the most iconic – yet also most volatile – franchises in horror history. Leatherface has been spreading fear and terror for over five decades now, but rarely has the future of the series been as promising and, at the same time, as radically reoriented as it is today. With the entry of the successful studio A24 and the signing of fresh talent, the era of aimless sequels seems to be giving way to an ambitious master plan.

© KSM GmbH

The Birth of Terror: The Legacy of 1974

To understand the series' appeal, one must return to its origins. Tobe Hooper's 1974 original, "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre", was far more than just a horror film; it was a visual assault on the senses. Shot on a shoestring budget and under extreme conditions, the film created a grittiness and authenticity that remains unmatched to this day. Interestingly, the original is far less gory than its reputation suggests. The horror arose primarily in the viewer's mind, fueled by the deafening screech of the chainsaw, the sweltering heat of Texas, and the unsettling sound design. Leatherface was not introduced here as a supernatural monster, but as a mentally disabled henchman abused by his family, which made the cruelty all the more real and oppressive.

The Bloody History: A Legacy Full of Contradictions

The 1986 direct sequel broke radically with this tone, delivering a garish, almost satirical splatter comedy that continues to divide fans to this day. In the 1990s, films like "Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III" and the bizarre "The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre" attempted to keep the franchise alive, but largely failed with critics and audiences alike. A commercial turning point came in 2003, when Marcus Nispel's remake proved that the character could still resonate with a modern audience.

Nevertheless, a period of confusion followed, with various timelines: "Texas Chainsaw 3D" (2013) and the prequel "Leatherface" (2017) rarely captured the series' former brilliance. In 2022, another new film was released on Netflix, but it failed to particularly impress fans and critics alike.

© Netflix

A franchise rediscovers itself

In summary, the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" franchise finds an identity in 2026 that goes beyond the mere slasher factor. After decades in which the brand was nearly diluted by sequels of varying quality, the combination of A24, Curry Barker, and an ambitious TV expansion brings a new form of relevance.

Fans can look forward to an era in which the roar of the chainsaw once again stands for genuine, psychological dread. With a focus on narrative quality and innovative directors, Leatherface seems poised to reclaim its rightful place on the throne of horror. It's a bold new beginning that proves that some nightmares never truly end – they're just dreamed again and again, with even greater intensity.

"Michael" is the long-awaited major film about Michael Jackson now hitting theaters. The biopic is the subject of heated debate—and is facing a tough time with film critics. Here, too. But why is that? And can Michael Jackson's nephew, Jaafar Jackson, pull off the challenging role of the King of Pop? In KinoCheck's META film review, you'll find out what we think of "Michael" and what other critics are saying!

Here's what it's about

A big performance is about to begin. In front of the stage, the crowd cheers, eagerly waiting for their musical idol to step into the spotlight. Michael Jackson stands with his back to us; we have to wait until the end of the film for the performance. What follows is a look back at the events that led up to this moment. It all begins in the 1960s, in Michael's hometown of Gary, Indiana. We see how, even as a child, he is groomed to deliver a perfect show alongside his older brothers. Always under the watchful eye of his father and manager, Joseph Jackson, played by Colman Domingo. The patriarch responds to any backtalk with ruthless harshness—sometimes even with a belt.

As the lead singer of the Jackson 5, the little boy becomes a star. As he gets older, he wants to stand on his own two feet—and also celebrates tremendous success as a solo artist. With producer Quincy Jones, he releases the album "Off the Wall" in the late 70s: a creative breakthrough that causes a sensation. "Thriller" follows in the early 80s—and becomes the most successful record of all time. Michael has made it: he is the biggest pop star on the planet. Yet he still struggles to hold his own against his overpowering father.

One of the biggest weaknesses

The conflict between father and son is at the heart of the biopic—and one of its greatest weaknesses. Michael Jackson's career is essentially portrayed here as the result of an attempt at emancipation. This drastically narrows the perspective on the artist. That Michael suffered under his tyrannical father is undisputed. Here, however, this tale of suffering—as heart-wrenching as it is in some scenes—also becomes a convenient framework for a biopic made in Hollywood that is thoroughly conventional in its dramatic structure.

In one of the numerous critical reviews of "Michael," David Fear of Rolling Stone puts it this way:

"This isn't really a biopic. This is the Passion of St. Michael."

A classic success story with an uplifting tone: despite all the setbacks and his father's resistance, the son manages to break free. And in the end, the initial promise is fulfilled: the grand performance before a cheering crowd.

Jaafar Jackson is convincing as Michael Jackson

As with so many biopics since the success of the Queen film "Bohemian Rhapsody," biographical milestones from the period in question are dutifully ticked off one after another here. With as much effort as possible. Live performances look deceptively real, and music videos are perfectly recreated. That said, the abundant musical and dance sequences in "Michael" are particularly impressive. You can tell from every single movement—no matter how small—that Jaafar Jackson must have prepared meticulously for the performances. The newcomer delivers a compelling performance, especially considering this is his film debut.

His performance also impresses Liz Declan of ScreenRant, one of the few critics who gives the film a rave review:

"Jaafar Jackson as Michael is as close to resurrecting the King of Pop as a movie can get, and it's easy to forget that he isn't actually Michael Jackson."

© Lionsgate

The feet can't stand still

And yet this attention to detail is also symptomatic of a film adaptation that, despite all its perfection, falls short at a crucial point. The material drawn from Michael Jackson's life and work is diligently depicted—but scarcely penetrated. There are a few small moments that show the direction it could have taken. For instance, when Michael—still a child at the time—records a track in the studio for the first time and can't keep his feet still while singing—a magnificently staged preview of just how compelling the symbiosis of dance and song would be in Jackson's artistic work. Ultimately, however, the biopic only hints at how Michael Jackson became one of the greatest pop artists of the 20th century. Why his songs aren't just good. But sensational.

Unfortunately, it's not enough to rely on what David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter writes at the end of his favorable review about the film's sound:

"The music has never sounded louder or better."

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

Controversial Change

Above all, however, one very different aspect remains in the dark—one that led to "Michael" being the subject of controversy even before its release. An original version of the film also addressed the child abuse allegations against Michael Jackson. Specifically, it dealt with a case from 1993. However, the scenes in question were removed—as it turned out later, the original court settlement reportedly prohibits any film adaptation of the case. This led to costly reshoots. Now, not a word is said about these or other allegations. This is repeatedly viewed with particular criticism. Jake Coyle of The Associated Press puts it this way:

"The result is a kind of fantasy film, one that relives the extraordinary highs of Michael Jackson while turning a blind eye to the lows."

As director Antoine Fuqua has since revealed, the originally planned version would have shown how Jackson was "treated like an animal" during the raid on his Neverland Ranch. So it sounds as though the star would have been portrayed more as a victim. Especially since the "Estate of Michael Jackson," the estate of the musician who died in 2009, is involved in the film's production. As a result, an overly critical portrayal of Michael Jackson was never to be expected—whether in the original or the current version. Given this, the film must accept the criticism from film reviewers. Even if the movie theater isn't a courtroom: a bitter aftertaste remains.

Conclusion: The biopic about Michael Jackson has received extremely critical reviews. We agree: "Michael" is disappointing—despite the strong musical performances.

"Michael" opens in theaters on April 24, 2026.

Here's what the Gundam movie is about

The "Gundam" movie is not intended to be a mere remake – rather, it aims to tell a new story. Netflix released the following plot description:

[The story] follows rival mech pilots fighting on opposite sides of decades-long war between Earth and its space former colonies. As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another, they're pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity.

When will the Gundam movie be released?

For now, it remains unclear when the "Gundam" film will be released. Since production has finally begun, we can hope for a 2027 release. But that's not certain, as extensive post-production is also likely. A theatrical release is apparently not planned – instead, the film is expected to premiere on Netflix. We'll keep you updated as more information becomes available.

The Gundam Franchise

This project marks the first live-action adaptation of the "Mobile Suit Gundam" universe. The franchise originated in 1979 with the anime series of the same name. At the heart of the original story is an interstellar war fought using giant combat machines – the so-called Mobile Suits.

The World of Mobile Suit Gundam

The world of "Gundam" combines spectacular robot battles with political conflicts, moral gray areas, and human destinies. At the heart of many "Gundam" stories is a futuristic scenario in which humanity has colonized space. Unlike many earlier mecha series, Gundam does not rely solely on heroic battles but portrays war as a complex, often tragic event with profound consequences for everyone involved.

A hallmark of the franchise are the eponymous "Mobile Suits" – giant, humanoid combat machines controlled by pilots. The most famous of these machines is arguably the RX-78-2 Gundam from the original series, which quickly became a cultural icon. But just as important as the technology are the characters themselves: young, often inexperienced protagonists find themselves caught up in conflicts that force them to take on responsibility and question their own moral convictions.

Over the decades, "Gundam" has grown far beyond the original anime. In addition to numerous series and films, the franchise also includes manga, novels, and video games. The universe continues to evolve, addressing new themes and appealing to new audiences. Among the more recent releases is the Netflix production "Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance."

© Netflix

The Movies and Series Starring Sydney Sweeney

Sydney Sweeney is currently one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses. Her breakthrough came with the HBO series "Euphoria," in which she plays Cassie Howard. She was also part of the cast of the first season of "The White Lotus." She took on a leading role in the romantic comedy "Anyone But You," which turned out to be a surprise hit at the box office. Following roles in films like "Immaculate" and "Madame Web," she most recently enjoyed great success with the film adaptation of "The Housemaid," for which a sequel is already in development. The "Gundam" film marks the next step in her Hollywood career.

The "Gundam" live-action film is, of course, by no means the only planned live-action adaptation of an anime. Several other projects are currently in development – from "Solo Leveling" to "Naruto." Filming for "Naruto" could even begin as early as this year. In our comprehensive preview, you'll get an overview of the currently planned live-action adaptations.
